The annual training camp headline. “So-and-so and What’s-his-name battle it out for the QB job.” There are a handful of noteworthy quarterback battles a year. Usually it occurs between a veteran and a younger player. And all things being equal, the veteran wins. So, this is the first of five QB battles I will cover. Tomorrow, I will cover the Cleveland Browns QB Battle.

Baltimore Ravens (AFC North)

Battle Type: 3-Way Battle

Combatants: Kyle Boller, Joe Flacco, and Troy Smith

Starter Entering Training Camp: Troy Smith

Troy Smith #10

2007 Stats: Passing – 4 Games, 452 Yds, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 79.5% QB Rating, 52.6% Completion Percentage

Rushing - 4 Games, 12 Attempts, 54 Yds, 4.5 AVG, 1 TD, 2 Fumbles

My take: I think Troy Smith has the edge. Kyle Boller is a bust, he’s had five years and he proved he’s not that good. Joe Flacco should take a year before he starts so he can learn the game. Troy Smith is the only one that is multi-dimensional, plus, he succeeded with a star RB in college, and the Ravens have one in Wilis McGahee.

What the Depth Chart will look like: Troy Smith, 1st String; Joe Flacco, 2nd String; Kyle Boller, 3rd String
